Self-Care in Med School

After four days of not studying and being back home in California, transitioning back to my med school life has been rough. We started our new block on Monday and it’s pretty much non-stop from now until winter break.

Since we wrapped up anatomy, those long hours in lab are now replaced by lectures. While I am used to having 7 or so lectures a week, we have double the number of lectures now, which is a bit intimidating. The amount of material and the level of detail we are expected to know is…a lot.

The good news is, the materials we’re covering now is much more interesting. The exam questions from here on out will be clinically-based, which I find more fun and exciting. The not-so-great news is that I already feel behind. I haven’t figured out how to best study for systems courses. Every second year I’ve asked has offered different (and at times, conflicting) advice. My biggest worry right now is that I’m not studying efficiently and that I’m not retaining the material. It’s scary to think about boards, but the material we’re covering now will most definitely be on the boards; making it even more important for me to learn it well and retain it.

There has been highlights too, despite how overwhelmed and tired I feel right now. It snowed the other day and I had a mini photo-shoot outside between lectures. Walking around campus felt so magical. I’m sure I’ll get sick of the snow eventually, but I’m treasuring how much I enjoy it right now. I picked up my interlibrary loan copy of Michelle Obama’s Becoming and found out that one of the librarians knows my name because of how many books I’ve requested this year. I don’t think I’ll meet my goal of reading 50 books by the end of the year, but I’m not quite ready to give up just yet.

I had a slow morning today by not going to my 8AM lecture and I felt better staying in the library to study instead. I also worked out in the afternoon and didn’t feel too guilty for taking a break from studying. It almost feels weird engaging in three self-care activities today (slow morning, working out, writing on here), but I’ve realized that if I want to create balance in my life, taking time to do these things is a good start.

I’m so glad tomorrow is Friday. I’ll be studying for most of the weekend, but it’s comforting to know we won’t get new material for two whole days.
